REVIEW: Music Facilitated Sleep    - By Sally Peel

SleepWave Laboratories  has started selling their finely engineered lullaby CD to adults, not just infants and children, with a small booklet that has instructions on how in can help even them to sleep better at night.

SleepWave Laboratories aims at the "Sleepless Adult" market with music

Until now music has generally not been considered a great sleep aid for adults since music is usually more stimulating for the listener than other sleep inducing sounds, but Dr. David W Austin, PhD, and the SleepWave Laboratories founder believe that they have developed a powerful sleep enabling music technology with their proprietary music making method:
"What we have effectively done is modify all the sounds from which music is normally composed, so that rather than being stimulating, it is truly soothing. In fact, most people do not perceive their own most lulling music to be stimulating but a close examination of the sounds employed reveal very stimulating effects - and so we have de-stimulated these effects, so to speak."

"For example, when a piano is played - even considering a beautiful piano piece played as gently as possible - each sound is made by literally striking a string with what they call a "hammer". A guitar, or a harp is used by plucking a string - sometimes with a pick. Furthermore, woodwinds, flutes and other monophonic instruments (instruments that are capable of playing only one note at a time, which comprise 95% of all instruments) are very abrupt when they go from one note to another. Although humans have been conditioned to not perceive these as stimulating events, the effect on the subconscious and organic level of the brain is clear: abrupt, plucking, and striking events are anything but soothing.

"So we developed Legato-Waveforming™ to create music with the sounds made by traditional instruments without the stimulating effects intrinsic to each instrument. The result is extremely soothing music.

"Originally we developed this to lull children to sleep, but after receiving truck loads of feedback that it was helping adults who've been suffering from insomnia for years, we think its time that we help them too. Nothing is more satisfying to hear from a listener how much your product has improved their lives. We hope that our CDs and booklets can continue to do just that: Improve the lives of our customers."

Favorite DeepSleep Lullabies The first released CD of music made by the proprietary ultra-soothing music making method, Legato-Waveforming™.

Music Facilitated Sleep Uses the same CD as Favorite DeepSleep Lullabies, but includes a booklet that describes how it may be used for adults as well as for children. It employs Lullaby Therapy - a leveraging of the classical conditioning that took place when you heard these same songs when you needed to sleep as an infant.
